Attention, awareness, and hemispheric differences in word recognition.

چکیده

-When subjects attend to the task of naming a briefly presented picture, their naming latencies are affected by a word presented by the side of the picture whether they are able to recognise the word or not. For unreported words the effect is stronger with related than with unrelated words, but this is reversed for words which enter awareness. Moreover, this relationship is largely a left hemisphere function. Two levels of interference are apparent in this experiment: an effect of related words which retard the picture naming latency, which operates at a pre-attentive stage of processing, and a further effect of phonemic or articulatory competition which operates as the identity of the printed word is available to awareness.

The impact of left and right intracranial tumors on picture and word recognition memory.

This study investigated the effects of left and right intracranial tumors on picture and word recognition memory. We hypothesized that left hemispheric (LH) patients would exhibit greater word recognition memory impairment than right hemispheric (RH) patients, with no significant hemispheric group picture recognition memory differences. The LH patient group obtained a significantly slower mean ...

Hemispheric specialization and independence for word recognition: a comparison of three computational models.

Two findings serve as the hallmark for hemispheric specialization during lateralized lexical decision. First is an overall word advantage, with words being recognized more quickly and accurately than non-words (the effect being stronger in response latency). Second, a right visual field advantage is observed for words, with little or no hemispheric differences in the ability to identify non-wor...

Verbal-Auditory Skills in 5-year-Old Children of Semnan/Iran in 2006

Introduction: This research was planned to determine some verbal-auditory skills (verbal-auditory short memory and phonological awareness) that have the closest relationship with speech and language development in 5-year-old children. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 400 children of pre-school classes affiliated to Education and Welfare organizations in Semnan city were select...

Atypical brain laterality in adults with ADHD during dichotic listening for emotional intonation and words.

Few studies directly examined the nature of hemispheric specialization and interaction in ADHD. The present experiment investigated left/right brain dynamics in unmedicated right handed adults with ADHD (n = 19) and in controls (n = 19), using a dichotic listening task to assess hemispheric differences in word and emotion recognition. We also assessed how focusing attention on a single ear modu...

An ERP Assessment of Hemispheric Projections in Foveal and Extrafoveal Word Recognition

BACKGROUND The existence and function of unilateral hemispheric projections within foveal vision may substantially affect foveal word recognition. The purpose of this research was to reveal these projections and determine their functionality. METHODOLOGY Single words (and pseudowords) were presented to the left or right of fixation, entirely within either foveal or extrafoveal vision. To maxi...
